Martina Thurmond Ongoing Education Scholarship
The Zonta Club of Key West will be opening the application period for the Martina Thurmond Ongoing Education Scholarship in March. The award will be provided to a woman at least 30 years of age enrolled as a new or existing student at the College of the Florida Keys, for use to re-enter the workforce, advance her current career or make a career change.
The Zonta Club of Key West awards this scholarship to honor the late Martina Thurmond, a long time Keys businesswoman and founding member of the Zonta Club of Key West. For nearly 60 years, she and her family owned and operated the Southern Keys Cemetery on Big Coppitt Key. Since 1982, she operated it solely, along with the family’s monument company, and in 2012 sold the business and retired … at age 92.
Martina was both a pioneer career woman and role model, as well as an active, respected member of Zonta of South Florida and it has been our honor to lend her name to this scholarship.
For more information about this scholarship, please email us at zontakeywest@gmail.com.
YOUNG WOMAN IN PUBLIC AFFAIRS SCHOLARSHIP
The goal of the Zonta International Young Woman in Public Affairs (YWPA) Program is to encourage more young women to participate in public and political life by recognizing a commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to the advancement of the status of women.
The young woman chosen for this award will have her name forwarded to the Zonta District for consideration in the choice of a Zonta International scholarship.
